Nimesh in Los Angeles
США
Добавлен 21 сен 2022
Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor not an urban planner!
But if no one else is going to talk about how the built environment in Los Angeles affects our physical, mental, and community health, I'll try to give it a shot.
"I wish more people would make their own videos! I have no interest in being the only 'big' voice in online urban planning. I want a whole army of creators making content about all kinds of places in the world!"
- Not Just Bikes
I purposely don't provide contact information, but if you really want to interact with me, you can post on the Streets for All subreddit or the Climate Town Discord linked below. Unfortunately, I don't have time to collaborate or do much in-person advocacy (putting these videos together in my downtime is the best I can do).
The views and opinions expressed by me on social media are my own and do not represent the views and opinions of my employer or any healthcare system or its employees.

Parks are Great but California's Constitution, Greedy Developers, and FDR Lock Away LA's Green Space

Did you know that many cities have so many parks that they don't even have parking lots? Yeah, you can just walk to your neighborhood park in those cities; but not in LA. Los Angeles has some of the best weather in the country, but ironically it's also one of the most park poor cities in the country (most people in LA can't just walk to Griffith Park or Venice Beach). And there are a lot of pow...
Why the Best Parts of Los Angeles Resemble a Mall
Просмотров 21 тыс.4 месяца назад
People like going to malls, like Westfield Century City, The Grove, and Ovation. Maybe our cities should be designed more like malls? This is a re-upload of my previous video, with a newly edited introduction to see if the algorithm will like this video better. New video in 2 weeks! The LA streetcar map in the video was developed by Jake Berman. You can buy a print of it here: 53studio.com/prod...
Culver City's Transit Was Doomed From The Start - A Harm Reduction Approach (Part 1)
Просмотров 20 тыс.9 месяцев назад
If you look at a city undergoing change the same way you look at a person undergoing change, you're more likely to be understanding of the underlying issues causing the problematic behavior in the first place. And the more understanding you have of the situation, the better prepared you will be in dealing with the eventual relapse. This video introduces the idea of harm reduction. You may be pa...

Why Many Cities Suck (and Los Angeles Doesn't Have to)

An explanation on why someone with no background in urban planning decided to start a RUclips channel about the built environment of Los Angeles.
Fun videos. Thanks. Not that traffic is fun, but you know what I mean
+ parking is tough to get to sometimes when you consider navigating the parking structure and getting to where you gotta go
Oh man, all those places you showed on Santa Monica Blvd is so spot on. Especially the idiots that are parked in the bike lane when there's barely a lane to begin with! So crazy, stay safe out there. I've biked close to 7000 miles in LA and have been alright so far...hoping to keep the streak and always staying alert
Culver City is my place.
I give up bro I’m tired I want to move from this city where the Government has no concern for the average citizens and care more about the drug addicts than the tax payers
0:45, 'here, eat my fkg exhaust'.
I'm in utter awe at your restraint at not adding a stab sound and a Wilhelm scream when you threw the scissors... Bravo.
None of these SUV vehicles have any business to be allowed to even go that fast, theyre no sportcars, theyre not track cars, they are simple transportation machines, machines we can control. This issue has plagued LA for decades, and it only seemed to have gotten worse. As in the old West when firearms were ban in certain towns when entering. Vehicles should be banned or altered to only go a certain speed in each County or City. Most Cars should at the very least go 30 to 40mph.
Nimesh you're so based
11:35 - I've lived in LA for 40+ years. The disaster that is the Beverly Center used to be painted brown. We called it the Brown Turd. 13:01 - Every time I see a pre-1950 map of Los Angeles transit my heart breaks. Right here, I can see the line that runs just a half-block from where I live now. Every time I cross that street walking to the grocery store, I sense the tracks that are still buried underneath and imagine what it would be like to just hop on and go to the beach. Or to the mountains. They were all accessible from a just a half-block away. Sigh. 17:53 - That looks heavenly.
You hit the nail on the head. Cars and NIMBYs stay out of city planning. Thanks for the great essay on urban improvements.
If the intersections had roundabouts it would flow (not fast) faster. But yea, blame it on bus and bike/ped space. The real truth here: People and traffic design engineers are addicted to signalized intersections as much as they are cars.
I see more and more people are giving up on cars as primary transportation because they are simply unaffordable. Cars are expensive to operate/register/insure/maintain in California. I don't live in a super bike friendly area, but I have an e-cargo bike that gets more use than my car for local errands. I keep a video camera going at all times facing rearward in case I ever get hit.
This video is put together really well. There is a lot of benefits to expanding bus accommodations. Reducing space on the roads, being able to get work done without paying attention to the road, and allowing people to easily socialize with other commuters.
One of the best videos covering America's ass public infrastructure. Other channels are good, but they're often biased and go on ranting, even if they're right. This video was unbiased, informative, and showed a lot of perspective. Very cool.
Your videos are so informative
11:20 we may have few parks in Los Angeles but our trees are so educated that research papers can be plucked like fruit
I lol'd
.....and to think LA had the most elaborate tram system in the world!..... car manufacturers/oil tycoons destroyed people's life for centuries in this city (and not only in LA) by designing urban life around cars.....stuuuupiiiid!
Hey just found this video. Absolutely loved it and you've got a new subscriber! I'm also moving to LA soon and I have chosen to live in an urban part of LA and take the train to work. My door to door commute should be only 30 minutes, 10 of that being walking (which I like to do). Groceries will be walkable etc. I absolutely refuse to deal with road rage and traffic jams every working day of my life. Just nope.
Great work. A video clearly born out of frustration that also stays generally matter of fact.
I lived in Europe for several years and despite the weather not being as nice as California I didn't care because quality of life was much better. Germany is rainy but I loved it.
The trust level in America is low thats why you have highways which divide areas.
What did you expect? Its LA not Dusseldorf. America was designed for cars and suburbs. If you want walking cities move to Europe.
I think there needs to be a law that every golf course be required to set aside a certain percentage of their land for public use if they enjoy the property tax loophole.
Dang! The fence around that park is f'd up! It makes me even more grateful that Hugo Soto Martinez took down the fence around Echo Park. Who is that city councilman? That is outrageous.
Traci Park cares more about rogue assaults in Venice than the epidemic of traffic violence on our city’s streets
Great video Nimesh!
Is west los angeles your favorite part of LA?
Hopping into the comments again to say that I have shown this video to so many people to convey the true weight of LA’s car problem and the reasons why HLA is so crucial. It’s extremely compelling, and I always tear up at the section where you visit the sites of pedestrian deaths in the city. Thank you!
Nimesh, you ride your bike and take the bus quite a bit I'm assuming. What kind of places do you go? There aren't alot of third places in Los Angeles and as a broke community college student who wants to get a social life, what are places I can go that are relatively cheap and inexpensive? Also, these comments are brutal. I had no idea people were so passionate about shit they probably won't think about again. It's takes courage to posts these videos while sitting back and talking shit requires none whatsoever. Dudes a literal doctor. He's accomplished more than half these haters ever will. God speed brohter
Watching this I find myself surprised by how good it is at holding my attention. It's awkward, but focused, purposeful, and obviously heartfelt. Great job.
When I look at the traffic in my home, Copenhagen, you can easily live without a car, as we have passes for bikes, underground - driverless trains and busses and soon we will also get a tram-system following some major roads (A tram in the street is a nuisance and we stopped those in the seventies, luckily!).
I do think changing Missouri Avenue into a linear park would push the cost of apartments here even higher. I love the idea, but the cost of renting is astronomical. Having a park here would also mean only people with high incomes could take advantage. We need more walking parks and more housing everywhere. It would be great to see you to a collab with Not Just Bikes. He has a number of videos talking about how cities can have multi-use streets that are better and safer for pedestrians.
I love your videos, especially since they heavily feature my local neighborhood. It's nice to be able to walk to West LA Park, but the heavy traffic noise and pollution I have to endure make that walk almost unbearable. I visited New York City as a teenager and thought the lack of nature was depressing. I went back this year and was so jealous of the number of parks and green spaces everywhere. We found so many little parks and great places to sit and enjoy the outdoors. I've tried to take the metro and adopt less driving, but it's almost impossible. The metro line to Santa Monica has to go through traffic, so it constantly swings between max speed and fierce breaking. I almost threw up from the motion sickness the last time I rode it.
i love education
Wow, how did I not know about the golf course exemption!? jeez, the rich can afford to hide their subsidies very, very well.
Don’t volunteer with the Salvation Army! They’re anti-LGBTQ and donate tons of money to conversion therapy groups
Sending this comment from 2029, thank god for robotaxis amirite?
"That will kill you." That was pretty eye opening. I knew our bodies are fragile.....those X-rays gave a new insight.
Bro not mentioning the twin cities 😭
Since nobody uses cable anymore, I have to get my discovery educational series from somewhere
Lived in Culver pretty much all my life. I think your ideas are solid. Are you planning to take the next step and propose this to the city?
Cool parks that dispense research papers!
thank you for this awesome video, vision zero NOW
Fortunately I live near a small park here in LA with only street parking. I either bike there or walk, it's just blocks away. Robert Burns Park.
A very well done video. Showing the victims and having the medical segment makes it so much more real, even to those of us who were already in support of reducing the dependency on cars.
"That'll kill you."
